DECAFFEINATED COFFEES

How is the caffeine removed from coffee beans?

Our decaffeinated coffees are produced by a direct solvent process that removes 99% of the caffeine. Based on extensive research data, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that this is a safe & effective method for coffee decaffeination.

Is there any caffeine in decaffeinated coffee?

Decaffeinated coffee in the United States must have at least 97% of its caffeine removed. Each five-ounce cup of decaffeinated, therefore, contains less than 5 milligrams of caffeine.

COFFEE PACKAGING

What materials make up the New England Coffee packaging?

As part of our 100-year commitment to quality we use the highest quality materials available in packaging technology. Our packages are made of polyester, foil, and polyethylene. The polyester is used as a barrier for oxygen, the foil as a barrier for oxygen and light, and the polyethylene provides a barrier for moisture and as a sealant for the bag. Without these materials New England Coffee could not maintain the standards quality that have guided our business since 1916.

Our new single-serve pods are commercially compostable and feature a unique, upcycled brown ring, filter, and lid. They are made with plant-based materials including the ring. Made with coffee bean skins left over from coffee roasting, repurposing a bi-product that would typically go to waste.   All specifications for our products require that they be constructed using only industry standard materials that meet or exceed Food & Drug Administration guidelines for product safety.

New England Coffee fully supports the ongoing efforts of the packaging industry to develop a more environmentally-friendly material that will protect the flavor and freshness of its products.

SINGLE SERVE

Why do these pods look different vs Traditional Plastic Pods?

Our new single-serve pods are commercially compostable and feature a unique, upcycled brown ring, filter, and lid. They are made with plant-based materials including the ring. Made with coffee bean skins left over from coffee roasting, repurposing a bi-product that would typically go to waste.

What are the pods made of?

About 90% of the total weight of a brewed pod is coffee grounds.

The remaining 10% of the weight is the lid, mesh filter and brown ring. They are all made with plant-based materials, many from renewable sources. They are all designed, certified, and tested to be compostable in large-scale commercial composting facilities that process food and organic waste with no need to separate them from the coffee grounds!

The unique brown ring is made with renewable materials, including upcycled coffee chaff.
Our lid is a bio-based cellulose film made with sustainably-managed pulp and compostable materials.
The filter is made of renewable plant-based materials.

What is coffee chaff?

Chaff is the thin natural skin of the coffee bean that comes off during the roasting process. It is similar to the skin on a raw, unroasted peanut!

What does plant-based material mean?

Renewable substances from various plants are used and processed as part of the raw material for the pod.

What does it mean to be “certified commercially compostable”?

A certified commercially compostable product has passed testing to confirm it meets or exceeds an internationally-recognized standard. This means it will normally break down safely and relatively quickly into compost in a large-scale commercial composting facility that processes other food and yard waste. Farmers and gardeners use compost to enrich the soil and help plants grow.

Who certifies these pods as “certified commercially compostable”?

Our pods have earned two certifications.
The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) runs an independent and comprehensive process. It certifies these pods meet or exceed the internationally-recognized ASTM D6868 standard for commercial compostability that confirms that the pods:

-Disintegrate within an established minimum time period
-Do not have a negative effect on compost quality
-Are not toxic for soil
-Meet strict rules about chemicals, including regulatory requirements for PFAs (fluorinated chemicals)

The Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA) runs a separate, independent and comprehensive process that uses tests at food waste composting facilities to certify that these pods break down as quickly and completely as composting facility operators typically need.

How long does it take for the pod to break down in a food and organic waste composting facility?

Testing shows the pod can break down in as little as 5 weeks in commercial composting.

Can I put the pods in all food and yard waste collection programs?

These pods have met the internationally-recognized standard to earn the “certified commercially compostable” designation for processing in typical large-scale food and organic waste collection and composting programs. Some programs automatically accept items that are Certified Commercially Compostable by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) and/or the Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA). Check with your municipality or composting program operator for local details.

Can I compost these pods in my backyard or home composter?

There is no current North American home compostable standard or certification process to confirm how well items such as certified commercially compostable coffee pods break down in home or backyard composting. Since we don’t know your unique at-home composting system, we can not, and do not, make a claim that our pod is home compostable.

If you don’t have access to a food waste collection program, you can learn how to set up your own at-home / backyard composting system:

In the United States: https://www.compostingcouncil.org/page/Education

In Canada: https://www.compost.org/backyard_compost/

Can I put the pods down the garbage disposal in my sink?

Manufacturers of garbage disposal units typically do not recommend putting items such as coffee pods into those units.

What do I do with the pods if I don’t have a food waste collection and composting program near me?

The number of people with access to food waste collection programs is growing rapidly. For now, the pods would have to go in the regular garbage with other food waste.

Do these pods break down in a landfill?

Not necessarily. Landfills are designed specifically so that nothing breaks down quickly in them – including food waste such as coffee. That’s why researchers can find 10-year-old carrots that are still orange inside and 40-year-old newspapers that are easy to read. Over the years, hot dogs and corn-on-the-cobs are a few of the other organic items that have also been found in landfills entirely intact.

Are certified commercially compostable and biodegradable the same thing?

No. Biodegradable simply means that something can break down over time in the right conditions and processes. However, that time can be many years even if the conditions are right. For example, a tree trunk is “biodegradable.” Anything that is compostable is also biodegradable, but not everything that is biodegradable is compostable.

A product can only call itself “certified commercially compostable” if it meets independent internationally-recognized standards designed to assess how well it will break down into compost and maximize its contribution to the health of plants and soil.

Are your single serve pods recyclable?

No. These pods are designed to be compostable with other food and organic waste in large-scale commercial composting facilities, not for recycling. Small plastic items such as coffee pods are often rejected in recycling processes because of their size and/or the complexity of separating the materials, meaning they are likely to go to landfills.

Composting is a preferable solution for anything that involves food waste such as coffee that can contaminate recycling processes.

Is the large silver inner bag compostable or recyclable?

Not yet. These bags, which are comparable to traditional ground coffee bags, have to meet challenging tests to ensure that they protect coffee from oxygen so consumers get the freshness and quality they expect. Food manufacturers are working on making this kind of packaging recyclable. For now, the large silver reusable multi-layer freshness foil bag can be re-used or disposed of with regular waste.

Are your single serve pods compatible with all Keurig®* -type brewers?

We analyze new brewer types as they come to market to make sure that our certified commercially compostable pods work well for consumers. We encourage consumers with specific questions to send us an email at consumerrelations@necoffeeco.com.

I’m getting an error when I try to brew in my older Keurig®* machine, what’s wrong?

If you have an older Keurig®* 2.0, it might be an issue with the age of the machine and the machine inaccurately reading our pod lids. First, try pressing the brew button again to override. If that does not resolve the issue, you may need to clean your sensor lens!

The sensor is located on the underside of the Keurig®* 2.0 brewer lid (see image below)
After running an empty pod cycle to flush the machine, wipe the sensor with a damp paper towel and allow it to dry. Then try brewing again! If you are still having trouble, please reach out to consumerrelations@necoffeeco.com for support.

Keurig sensor

Why is there a green ring around the edge of the lid? Does it mean decaf?

The green ring has a special coating so the pod works properly in certain single serve brewers, like Keurig ®* 2.0 brewers.

Why is the compostable pod leaving coffee grounds in my cup?

Consumers who experience this issue commonly have hard water, including from wells. Keurig®* recommends that consumers de-scale their brewers at least every 3 to 6 months. They also sell filters through their website. Both steps can help bring the water pressure through the brewer to a level that typically solves this issue.
